New Patient Exam

Dr. Ron KrollDr. Kroll and his staff at Alta Mesa Family Dentistry want your visit to be as pleasant, thorough, and educational as possible. As a new patient, they want to get to know you, what your needs are, and what your past dental experiences have been.

First, a set of digital x-rays will be taken with cutting edge technology that offers the benefits of much lower radiation than conventional film and instant images-no more waiting for x-rays to be developed! Also, with our new FDA approved Logicon Caries Detection Software, Dr. Kroll can diagnose decay while it's still in the enamel, before it causes major destruction to your tooth. Often, if a cavity is not through the enamel, Dr. Kroll can show you how to reverse the decay without the need for drilling.

After x-rays are taken, Dr. Kroll and the staff will show you your mouth on a video screen with the help of the autofocus Intra-Oral Camera, allowing you to view the condition of your teeth and gums and giving the doctor the chance to diagnose problems in the hard-to-see areas.

A thorough examination of each tooth will also be done with the laser cavity finder Diagnodent, which shines a light into your tooth to detect any decay. The laser cavity finder is 100% accurate and helps find tiny areas of decay that may be missed with a conventional dental tool. Often, if decay is detected when it's small in the little pits and fissures of the tooth, staff can use air abrasion to clean out the decay-no drilling, no anesthesia, and no discomfort!

Dr. Kroll will also perform a detailed periodontal examination of your gum tissue and explain his findings with you. The #1 disease in the United States, it's estimated that 90% of the population over age 45 has some form of periodontal disease. If not treated, it can lead to tooth loss, gum attachment loss, and even heart disease. Lastly, Dr. Kroll will do a thorough check of your head and neck and the inside your mouth for any signs of oral cancer.

Once all the diagnostic and imaging procedures have been completed, Dr. Kroll will offer suggestions for treatment options and a written treatment plan to ensure your optimum oral health.

From x-rays to cavity detection to periodontal analyses to hidden tooth decay, the staff of Alta Mesa Family Dentistry perform the most comprehensive and thorough new patient examination available on the Monterey Peninsula.
